A’shon Galaxy Spins Love and Hope into Save the Last Dance

I’ve always had this feeling that people expect far too much from the last dance. At the end of it, someone goes back home smiling because, let’s be honest, if you survived the drinks, the moves, or that someone stepping on your shoes, then you saved the day as well. A’shon Galaxy understands the assignment perfectly with Save the Last Dance.

We started this year writing about A’shon through More Than Only Friends. In hindsight, this gave us only a small hint of what was already coming. That song now appears on his 12-track album Forever Was All I Hoped, alongside today’s subject and several other majestic little incantations about love, hope, desire, and whatever life manages to squeeze in between.

One Dance at a Time

Save the Last Dance brings together those chords, guitars, drums, that soulful bassline I love, and A’shon Galaxy‘s unmistakable voice. You can’t miss the easy-going neo-soul and R&B feel. It has plenty of vintage soul flavour, but the groove keeps it fresh, like that first breeze after a ridiculously hot summer day.

The story itself starts right in the middle of attraction. Two people dance closer, their eyes get lost in each other, and everybody else is just taking up perfectly good oxygen. “Everybody needs someone to love,” he sings, before deciding that perhaps he has already found his candidate. Nothing complicated here. A’shon simply asks her to “save the last dance”, and honestly, I’d probably say yes.

One Song, Bigger Story

Because I’ve already mentioned the full album, well… this is where things start making even more sense. Titles including A Love So Beautiful, With Him, Cycle of My Love, Till We Had Enough and A Long Long Way map out a record fascinated by relationships and everything people manage to do to their own hearts.

Meanwhile, Save the Last Dance gradually raises the stakes. What begins with attraction reaches the thought that “this dancing is leading to something eternal.” Bold conclusion after a few turns around the floor? Absolutely. But then again, love has made people do far stranger things, hasn’t it?

A Shelf Full of Notebooks

Sean Wilburn, better known as A’shon Galaxy, grew up surrounded by music. Between Oakland’s rich musical legacy and Vallejo’s own remarkable scene, he found inspiration in everyone from The Isley Brothers, Prince and Quincy Jones to local icons like E-40 and Mac Dre.

Armed with little more than a notebook and a stubborn determination to write, Sean filled page after page with lyrics before teaching himself keyboards, guitars, bass and drums. I would say that first notebook probably deserved its own recording contract.
