Gianfranco GFN Invites Everyone Into Traces of the World

The world we live in could keep the entire love of this universe – past, present and future – with ease. Despite humankind’s stubbornness, the world keeps smiling, rearranging things, giving us another road, another face, another reason to look around. The traces we leave become part of this place for generations to come. And, if we are lucky enough to travel freely, to discover, to feel and love along the way, some of those traces come home with us.

That thought runs straight through Traces of the World, where Gianfranco GFN brings together movement, cultures and human connection into four minutes of warm, beautifully lived-in Acid Jazz and Soul.

A Long Road Before the Passport Stamps

Gianfranco GFN has travelled musically for decades, before making travel itself part of the subject. Born in Bienne, Switzerland, to Italian parents, he picked up guitar as a child and largely taught himself by studying records, sheet music and whatever he could get his hands on.

By 1981 he had played his first concert of original material with hard-rock band Fears. Then he moved through the underground clubs, acid jazz, and touring across Switzerland. Later came solo work, his own label, 96 Montigolfiera Production, and eventually his distinctive “GIAZZ” identity.

His 2015 album Downtown in Person 70’s brought together eleven musicians, while CA’GIAZZ followed with a fourteen-piece orchestra. MIDEM in Cannes came in 2017. Across his solo career, he has written more than 80 tracks, gathered over 500,000 YouTube views and seen his music travel through radio and playlists well beyond Switzerland.

I like that history here. After all those years, Gianfranco has probably seen enough of the music business to write another album about that alone.

The World Comes Back With You

For Traces of the World, Gianfranco GFN brings guitar together with David Caraccio on bass and keyboards, Nicolas Pittet on drums, Christian Chopard on keyboards, Lucien Matthey on percussion, Vladimir Carbone on vocals and Charlyn on backing vocals. Each one leaves their own trace along the way, and somehow they all point towards this amazing world of ours.

The groove feels organic and open. There’s enough funk, soul and world-music flavours flowing through Gianfranco’s familiar Acid Jazz language. The lyrics keep the idea beautifully simple: Every gift, every lesson told / Pieces of the world worth more than gold. Then comes my favourite image: And when I return my hands are wide. That line gets it. Travel changes the luggage you cannot weigh at an airport.

Released as part of Gianfranco GFN’s upcoming Sixth GIAZZ album, Traces of the World holds decades of curiosity into another chapter, — still on the move, still meeting people, still collecting traces along the way.
