Sasha Sky Faces the Past with Close Call

Durham, UK. Cathedral, cobbled streets, students everywhere… you know the place. Plenty of history, plenty going on. But Durham is also where Sasha Sky chose to learn, sing and eventually start taking this whole music thing seriously.

Now she’s back with Close Call, her tenth studio single, after something in her recent life dragged an old trauma back up again. So, naturally, I wanted to know what she had for us. Turns out, quite a lot.

From singing at eight to release number ten

Sasha has loved singing and writing songs since she was eight, although actually putting her music out took a little longer. Fear got in the way for years, until studying Performing Arts and Music at New College Durham helped her push through it.

She started releasing music in 2021, right in the middle of lockdown. Funny what lockdowns can drag out of people – in Sasha’s case, apparently it was finally putting the songs out. Since then, she’s built a catalogue that leans into R&B while happily wandering into other styles too.

Keeping it close to home

There’s a proper North East team behind the release too. Close Call was recorded at Heartbreak Studios in North Shields, with KOBER handling production and Andi Anderson on sound engineering. Sasha took care of the styling herself, while Samantha Orton shot the photos at Quay Studios, also in North Shields.

I like that – local artist, local studios, local people around the project. Keeps the whole thing close to home.

Then the past knocked again

The idea for Close Call came after recent events brought back trauma from the previous year. Sasha keeps the exact story private, and I’m good with that. We don’t need the full case file to understand where the song is coming from – the feeling tells us enough, right? “My chest gets tight” appears early in the lyrics, followed by “Why am I left behind in the wreck you made?”

Yeah, I felt that one. The song goes through disbelief, anger, and that horrible feeling when your brain keeps dragging you back to the same thing again and again, whether you want it or not. Then Sasha hits us with the title line: “Did you think close call when I stayed silent?” Pretty heavy words for two syllables.

Singing it out

Towards the end, everything gets simple: “I breathe / Barely / Can you hear me? / I’m drowning.” And then comes the line that pretty much explains why this song exists: “Guess I’ll sing / About it / Till they get him.” By that point, I kind of get why Sasha had to get this one out of her system.

My honest opinion? Yeah, there’s sadness in there, plenty of drama behind it, and all the rest. But what I hear most is reconciliation. To me, it feels like reaching up, grabbing a hand, holding on tight, and pulling yourself back to your feet somewhere between those chords.
