Swamp Raat. Sounds like something you’d stumble across in a dodgy back alley, but instead, it’s Newcastle’s latest contribution to the ever-growing wave of gritty, no-nonsense rock. A bunch of lads. Nathan Lee, Mitch Connolly, Lucas Knowles-Levitt, and Luke Dungworth. They found each other through a combination of band breakups, flat-sharing, and, in true British fashion, a pub session. And somehow, it all just worked.

Swamp Raat Blue

Newcastle, a city that’s spat out more musical talent than most, is once again proving it has something in the water. Think Sam Fender, Maxïmo Park, and The Futureheads. And yeah, Swamp Raat is the latest to add their name to that list.

Swamp Raat’s debut single, Blue, has been released on February 29, 2024. It’s a cocktail of melancholic lyrics, gritty melodies, and those technical guitar licks that make you want to grab a pint and nod along. The band pulls inspiration from the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, and Dinosaur Jr. So you know you’re in for something raw, unfiltered, and with just the right amount of chaos.

The Birth of Blue

This began as an idea forged through late nights, loud rehearsals, and sheer determination. Blue has been brewing for years, finally perfected with the current lineup. The timing? Right after their first-ever gig on February 29, 2024. Nothing like kicking things off with a bang.

Recorded at Inheart Studios in Blaydon upon Tyne, the session itself was as unpredictable as their formation. Mitch, for one, wasn’t even part of the band yet – he just showed up, started jamming, and never left. His guitar licks and harmonies were last-minute additions, and yet, they became an essential part of the track.

Then there’s the solo. Completely improvised on the spot. Because why overthink when you can just let the music do its thing? I just love this approach! That spontaneity is what gives Blue its edge. Structured, but never sterile.

The Road Ahead

If you’re in the mood to see Swamp Raat live, you’re in luck. They’re hitting the road in April 2025, wrapping it all up with a homecoming show in Newcastle on the 26th. More gigs, more studio time, and undoubtedly, more chaotic recording sessions that somehow produce gold.

Swamp Raat Blue

Blue introduces Swamp Raat with confidence, setting the tone for what’s to come. It’s a statement. And you can read it in full on their Spotify, Instagram and YouTube pages. A foot stomp on the industry’s door, demanding attention. If this is just the beginning, we’re all in for one hell of a ride.
