Michi Whiskey

To be human is a challenging thing, that’s clear. We fall in love, make silly promises, and convince ourselves we’ve finally found the right person. Then love changes the rules and slaps us all with the same enthusiasm. But hey, we’re always ready for another round.

Well, Michi knows a thing or two about that. It took her over ten years to record Whiskey, although I suspect she remembers exactly how she felt when she wrote it.

Whiskey and That Bloody Question

Originally from Virginia and now based in Madrid, Michi wrote Whiskey after discovering her girlfriend had been cheating on her. And I guess that’s a pretty good reason to write a country heartbreak song.

The relationship ended, but one question remained. Is she thinking about me too? It’s a cruel thing, really, when someone who meant the world to you becomes someone you can only think about. I suppose we’ve all been there. Usually when our common sense has already gone home.

Country Music, Queer Love and Shelly Ray

Michi grew up dreaming of becoming a country star, even calling herself Shelly Ray as a teenager. Now she’s bringing her own queer perspective to country music, with a lesbian heartbreak story straight from her own life.

She recorded the vocals and guitars in Madrid with Anto Vaquero, while Lance Koehler took good care of the drums, mixing and mastering in Virginia.

And there’s another lovely part to this story. Over 200 Kickstarter supporters helped raise $20,000 for her upcoming album, Short Story, due in spring 2027. I think I’ll keep my whiskey reserve untouched until then.

Another Round, Michi?

Released November 6 through LAVICHI Records, Whiskey will have its music video on November 13. And guess what? Is featuring Arantxa Castilla-La Mancha from Drag Race España.

And speaking of the full album, I have to say I’ve really missed this kind of country music. That good old country sound, the storytelling, the melodies… I absolutely loved Whiskey, and I’m already looking forward to hearing the rest. More of this, please!

Ready for another round? Meet Michi here, follow her music, and see what else she’s got brewing. Hopefully something with a happier ending this time!
