Just a Song? That’s What I Thought Too

KP Hawthorn’s Fool’s Gold: There’s something about this song that made me stop everything I was doing. Not pause – stop. I was mid-email, mid-scroll, mid-whatever, and then Fool’s Gold played, and I realized the song had better self-awareness than most people I know. KP Hawthorn pushes it open and sets her stories on the table, right next to your coffee cup. And I like that. I’ve missed that.

KP Hawthorn’s Fool’s Gold plays like someone dug out a box of old demos, memories, and emotional invoices, then hit “record” with the door open and no plan B.

KP Hawthorn’s Fool’s Gold: The Stage, the Luggage, and the Echo

“There’s something in my eyes when I look up at the marquee / I’ve been doing time with a guitar slung around me.” When I heard that line, I laughed. Not because it’s funny. Because I felt it in my teeth. I’ve looked at that metaphorical marquee a few times in my life – the kind that says you made it, but your heart’s somewhere else. KP Hawthorn isn’t telling you she’s tired. She’s showing you the kind of tired that builds up after too many hotel checkouts and half-eaten dinners in the green room.

Fool’s Gold hit me right in that weird spot between pride and ache. Like when you finally get what you’ve been chasing, and realize you left someone behind. Or worse – you brought them with you, but they’re not really there anymore. And don’t get me started on the bags full of history. That line felt like someone emptied mine on the floor and started naming every item out loud.

Memories Packed in Gear Bags

The production of KP Hawthorn’s Fool’s Gold walks a fine line, rich, but never polished. You can hear the space around her voice. It was recorded at Fitting Room Studio in Nashville, produced by KP and Steve Berns, with top-shelf players: Ted Pecchio on upright bass, Chris Benelli on drums, and Johnny Hawthorn on guitar. That rhythm section it just pulses beneath her like highway lines under headlights.

“Take these bags full of our history / Welcome to Gold Rush country.” That line stopped me. She’s talking about what you drag around when the show’s over. Love, regret, a few bad calls, maybe a voicemail you still haven’t deleted. The lyrics just tell the truth the way a worn-out road dog would say it over a drink.

And when she lands on that chorus… “These perfect diamond dreams and these precious silver linings are only fool’s gold without you.” …it’s not sentimental. It’s an admission. All the shine in the world doesn’t matter when there’s no one waiting on the other side of the door. Or maybe there used to be, but you missed your chance. Just a truth dropped in your lap like loose change.

There’s more on the way. High Road, the second single – featuring Rosie Flores – lands August 15. Then the full album, Til The Glitter End, drops September 12 on Mule Kick Records. But for now, Fool’s Gold is all you need. Let it sit with you a while before moving on.
