Zachary Mason Returns To Folk With Welcome To My Heart

We all have things we don’t usually talk about. Musicians can breathe them out, turning those thoughts into songs instead of keeping them locked away. To call that an advantage? I’m not sure. But that’s probably why records built this way slip into your ears without much effort. That’s exactly what kept crossing my mind while I listened to Zachary Mason‘s Welcome To My Heart.

The Guildford songwriter opens a small window into those internal battles, then lets the songs speak for themselves.

Three Talks With The Mirror

Welcome To My Heart marks Zachary Mason‘s return to folk after spending the previous two years exploring rock. The three-song EP revolves around sadness, endurance and the long process of making peace with yourself. The project also introduces Grammy-nominated producer and engineer David E Beats, who mixed and mastered the record while contributing bass and rhythm guitar to I Need Freedom. Nate Barnes of Rose Hill Drive appears behind the drum kit, while Little Big Town bassist John Thomasson joins the closing track.

The opening piece is called Can’t Feel My Autumn… Honestly, I couldn’t think of a better title for what follows. It draws from a deeply personal chapter in Zachary’s life, when medication blurred the emotional connection he had always felt with his favourite season.

The lyrics reflect that distance with painful clarity: “I’m trapped within protection… I see the world from afar… This special time of autumn is running vague in my soul.” Even the repeated line, “Life is so funny…” leaves you wondering how much of that smile is actually real.

Finding A Way Through

Next comes I Need Freedom. The title already tells you where this one is heading. “The walls are made of my soul” can hurt a little, I know. But then again, a soul touched by redemption can bring those walls down.

Then comes the bridge: “”And as my freedom bleeds, the blood drops fall as seeds of despair.” I read it as the painful cost of trying to become yourself again. Every drop of blood becomes another seed, and instead of growing into peace, it grows into fresh despair. The truth is, healing rarely follows a straight line.

Finally, Me And I reaches for acceptance rather than some easy answers, repeating Finally comes Me And I, and this may be the one I love the most. “I watch myself and try to make my way…” may sound simple on paper, but I think we’ve all heard that little voice at one point.

Years Behind The Strings

Outside this release, Zachary Mason has quietly built an impressive catalogue since 2021, writing hundreds of demo recordings across several genres. His music has reached publications including Rolling Stone En Español, SPIN Magazine, The Big Takeover and several international outlets, while his songs have also found places in film and television sync libraries.

Reading all that, I had the feeling the numbers matter a little less than the songs themselves. And somehow, I like that.
