Keeana Kee “Tik Tok”: The Ultimate Summer Anthem Groover City
Let me tell you something. Being a music curator is like being the guy at the buffet who’s told to try one dish but gets to sniff every damn pot. You know every aroma, hear every note. And you feel every lyric. And yeah, it’s a blessing, but it’s also a curse. I listen to hundreds, sometimes thousands of tracks. Some mediocre, some brilliant, some that sound like your neighbour’s cat fell on a synth. But once in a while, one hits so hard, it resets your purpose. Reboots your mission. Reminds you why you do what you do.
Today is the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims. Yes, that’s a real day, and yes, you had no idea it existed until now. And today I’m serving you something that matters more than likes, charts, or streams.
Ooberfuse, the British-Filipino band who’ve already dropped tracks with Snoop Dogg and somehow caught the attention of the Pope himself (because why not?), just sent me their latest release, “We Will Overcome.” An SOS wrapped in a pop-reggae hyped melody, a fist raised against child abuse, trafficking, and the silence that kills. And it’s not about chasing clout or TikTok virality. It’s about dignity. It’s about voices. And it’s about time we listen.
Let’s rewind. A while ago, the Trump administration decided to axe USAID funding like it was trimming hedges. What got chopped? Oh, just the resources that helped rescue and protect abused children worldwide. Real hero move, right? Now enter Ooberfuse. They flew straight into the eye of the storm – Olongapo, Philippines. Teamed up with Father Shay Cullen, a missionary priest who’s been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize four damn times (yes, four), and partnered with his organization, PREDA. This is boots-on-the-ground activism. It’s music with a backbone.
PREDA, for the uninitiated, stands for People’s Recovery, Empowerment and Development Assistance. They’ve been at it since 1974, rescuing, healing, defending. Legal aid. Aftercare. Therapy. You name it. Their mission? Simple: protect the defenceless, crush the silence, and fight the horror that is child exploitation. Father Shay, blunt as ever, says: “With the reopening of US military bases in the Philippines, we will inevitably see a spike in the sexual and drug demands of US sailors… serviced by Filipina women and children. It’s the perfect storm.” He’s not exaggerating. He’s lived it. For 50 years.
Cherrie Anderson, one half of Ooberfuse, grew up in the Philippines. She knows the culture of silence. The kind that gags a child, makes them carry shame that was never theirs. “Music is a powerful means to end the silence,” she says. Damn right it is. Hal St John, her bandmate, recalls hearing the children at PREDA sing “we will overcome” at the top of their lungs – broken voices finding strength again: “My heart was quite literally bursting with joy.”
And here’s the punchline: you can help. No, not by retweeting and moving on. By listening, sharing, and donating. All proceeds from this project go to PREDA. Real money. Real impact. Here’s your action plan: watch the video – it’s not for entertainment, it’s a reality check. Share the song like your soul depends on it. Donate at https://preda.org/donate. And follow them on all the socials – yes, even the one you never use.
This collaboration also includes PREDA’s Home for Girls label, Future Sound of Fire, from London. You might not have heard of it – good, you just did now. That means they’re doing the work for the cause, not the applause. So today, forget your Spotify Discover Weekly. Forget your playlist algorithms. Just go raw, real and human. Ooberfuse’s “We Will Overcome” is the anthem for truth, healing, and resistance. Find Ooberfuse on Facebook, Spotify, Instagram, YouTube.
