Carmen Rose Davidson Whiskey & Sin

Imagine growing up loving two versions of the same person. One who hugs you goodnight, and another who walks through the front door after one drink too many. A little girl that doesn’t understand addiction. She simply keeps hoping tomorrow will bring back the dad she loves.

Years later, those memories finally found a way out, and that’s exactly where Carmen Rose Davidson found Whiskey & Sin. And I just stopped for a moment, thinking that some songs entertain you, while others take you straight back to memories you thought life had already packed away.

Carmen Rose Davidson Whiskey & Sin

Childhood and the taste of whiskey

Released during Alcohol Awareness Week, “Whiskey & Sin” revisits one of the deepest chapters of  life through an emotional blend of blues-rock, country soul and gospel fire. The song originally appeared on her debut album Sincerely Yours. A record that spent ten years growing into a collection of deeply personal stories about trauma, faith, healing and family, before finally reaching listeners.

From the very first verse, I had the feeling this wasn’t going to be an easy listen. “I see life as a funny game…” Then everything sharpens. “Thanks to the whiskey and thanks to the gin, for turning my daddy to sin.” There isn’t any mystery hiding behind clever metaphors. This is for real. Every new verse pulled me back to the same thought: imagine growing up without knowing which version of your dad would walk through the front door.

I found myself thinking about how many families will recognise these moments without ever talking about them. I think that’s why this song feels so real.

From West London To The Stage

Growing up in West London within a musical household, Carmen Rose Davidson absorbed gospel, country, rock, Arabic influences, musical theatre and plenty more before shaping her own sound. She writes about the parts of life most people keep to themselves, and somehow her voice makes those moments feel familiar, even when they aren’t your own.

Alongside her live band, Little Lion, she has already brought that energy to venues including the Roundhouse, Rich Mix and Oxford’s Bullingdon, and from what I’ve heard, audiences don’t seem to forget her in a hurry.

Producer Greg Coulson gives Whiskey & Sin plenty of heart, while Jake McBride from Animind Studios made the video below look absolutely stunning.

I don’t know what Carmen felt after finally releasing this song. I only know what I felt after hearing it. For a moment, I thought about how many children grow up in homes with a story just like this one. And honestly, I didn’t feel sadness. I felt acceptance, hope and, above all, relief.

Now go spend some time with her Instagram, Spotify, YouTube and Carmen Rose Davidson‘s official website. Maybe you’ll hear something completely different from what I heard. But hey, that’s the beauty of songs like this.
