On June 2, Breaka, the famed producer and DJ, unveiled his much-anticipated EP titled Like Water. With that, Breaka’s Refreshing Wave: Like Water EP is out! This release marks his inaugural self-release of 2023, proudly distributed through his personal brand, Breaka Recordings. In this project, the EP encapsulates his unique, avant-garde club sound, delivering it across two distinctive tracks.

‘Like Water to a Fish’, the opening track, transitions seamlessly into the second, ‘Lime Bike Elf Bar’. By drawing on trance, breakbeat, juke, and elements of techno, the EP showcases Breaka’s ability to blend multiple genres with the UK’s most prominent sound styles. A true testament to his innovative approach.

The thrill from the new age trance-like

Speaking about the creative process behind these tracks, Breaka shares, “I penned down these two tracks towards the tail end of 2022. My primary aim was to amalgamate the thrill I derive from the new age trance-like, trippy techno with my familiar UK-centric sound palettes.”

Discussing his first full-fledged 4×4 tune, he elaborates, “‘Like Water to a Fish‘ was envisioned to have a natural and fluid feel, despite being built around rather rugged rhythms and strong harmonies. It serves as a conduit between breakbeat elements and the more rapid aspects of trance, techno, and juke.”

A much-needed fresh air to the dancefloor

For ‘Lime Bike Elf Bar‘, Breaka muses, “The quirky title takes inspiration from the two most prevalent phenomena of the 2020s. It amuses me how these four words, which would have had no significance a few years back, now conjure up an image of a Gen-Z individual navigating through life. Despite its heavy, rolling nature, I believe it introduces a much-needed breath of fresh air to the dancefloor.”

Born and raised in London, Charlie Baker, known professionally as Breaka, has developed his alias following an extensive exposure. It all started with Dub sound systems at events like Subdub. Followed by countless nights entertaining throngs of students at house parties. Since then, his musical style has evolved, marked by bold bass lines and distinctive percussive rhythms. This sound clearly reflects his background as a drummer, raised in a jazz and funk-influenced environment.
