Bea Núñez musical exploration: My introduction to the unique voice of Bea Núñez, also known as Lentejitas, traces back to a profound musical moment in late 2006. I vividly remember encountering ‘Tan Cañi‘ by Alhoeverah within the enchanting realms of Buddha Bar VIII, a collection spread across two CDs that became a staple in my auditory experience. Among tracks like “Madre, Si Hesto Hazina” by Yasmin Levy and “Mystic Desire” by Angel Tears, ‘Tan Cañi‘ stood out with its distinctive finesse and purity. Qualities that made it feel as though a child’s voice was encapsulating an immense depth of emotion. This song not only stuck with me but also became my cherry on top of a very delectable cake.

Over the years, ‘Tan Cañi‘ remained a constant in my playlist, a lingering echo of that initial magic. Curiosity eventually took over, and I delved deeper to discover more about the enigmatic artist behind this track. This journey of musical archaeology led me to Lentejitas, revealing the full spectrum of Bea Núñez‘s genius. Upon reaching out, I found her to be not only an incredibly talented artist but also a kind and respectful soul. Qualities that are as rare as they are refreshing.

It was from this place of mutual respect and admiration that Bea agreed to this interview, offering a glimpse into her artistic process and the profound influences that shape her music. Join us as we explore the unique blend of Flamenco with modern sounds that defines her work, and discover the person behind the music that has deeply resonated in the hearts of many, including my own.

First of all, may I ask… who is Bea Núñez?

Bea Núñez is a woman who is enthusiastic about musical creation and passionate about blending Flamenco with any musical genre. Bea is bold across genres, working as a creator, performer, sound engineer, continually learning with each song she produces.

Can you tell us a bit about how you got started with music? What were some of your early influences growing up in Spain?

I grew up immersed in Flamenco due to my paternal roots while living on the island of Tenerife, influenced by Salsa music. At the age of eight, I began playing the Hammond organ, which featured buttons for effects, equalizers, reverbs, and various rhythms, with several keyboards allowing me to play complete songs including bass, chords, melodies, and rhythms—it was incredibly fun! Subsequently, I moved to Madrid at a young age, where House and Funky music dominated my nights and days, and I found significant support and assistance.

Bea Núñez’s musical journey blends various genres. How did you develop your unique sound, and who or what has influenced your musical style over the years?

Without a doubt, Flamenco and the inspiring and liberating connotations it carries were what opened my mind to chill, lounge, etc. This is the foundation, let’s say, the bold idea of fusing something as solemn as Flamenco and its purity with electronic bases, sounds of organic instruments and synthesizers, thus creating that sound, shaping it, and introducing it into various environments where venues like Buddha Bar paved the way for this type of fusion.

What inspired you to write ‘Tan Cañi’? Can you share the story or emotion behind the song?

The concept of ‘Tan Cañí’ was to depict a deeply felt and profound love that was lost. It needed a sharp conclusion that reflected that no matter how intense the love, if it is not nurtured, it dissipates and is given to those who truly deserve it. The term ‘Cañí’ lent a beautiful gipsy profile that elevates the song significantly.

Besides ‘Tan Cañi’, which of your songs are you most proud of, and why?

For me, “En la profundidad” represents a new rebirth for Bea as a music producer. After a period of dormancy, this song emerged while I was alone during the COVID lockdown in my home studio. It marked a pivotal moment that helped me synchronize with the production process and rejuvenated my musical creativity.

You release music under various artist names such as Ahloeverah, Lentejitas, Animaya, Kimahri, Chic & Choc, B & D, etc. How do you decide which persona to use for a particular project?

Reaching audiences was challenging with purely instrumental ambient songs or genres like Chillout or Lounge, particularly when it came to inclusion on CD compilations. Thus, when presenting my songs, I opted for different pseudonyms for different genres, which opened more opportunities. My intention was not really to market myself as an artist but as a producer. Nowadays, with the Internet and many platforms readily accessible for artists to showcase their music, it doesn’t make as much sense, so all these personas are now linked to Lentejitas, which is how many in the music world recognize me.

Your music fuses flamenco with ambient, chillout, deep house, and Arabic percussions. How do you approach blending these diverse genres?

I believe that in fusion, I have always been very cautious to try to maintain a balance between the purest sounds, Flamenco lyrics or voices with deep emotion. And keeping the fundamental characteristics of each musical style. I always pay close attention to not overburden any of the environments until I achieve the mix I desire.

What is your songwriting process like? Do you start with lyrics, a melody, or does it vary from song to song?

Well, you never know where inspiration will come from, but I usually have a clear idea of what I want to accomplish and go straight to the point. I have had moments where the lyrics and melodies emerged first, sometimes I sit down to see what inspires my mind, other times it flows while I’m engaged in some everyday activity… You never know!

Your songs often reflect deep personal experiences and emotions. How do your life experiences influence your music?

My songs mirror deep experiences and emotions that could resonate with anyone, so they are open to the personal interpretation of whoever listens to them. As a creator, I cannot deny that your life influences what you produce, so I always try to highlight the positive and beautiful aspects of everything to continue navigating this dream world.
