Shola Ama: Timeless Talent Returns with New Music and Ageless Charm

Published:

UK soul singer Shola Ama, renowned for her timeless beauty and vocal prowess, has made a striking appearance in the music video for Shaznay Lewis’s comeback single, “Good Mourning.” Released last month, the video showcases Shola looking as radiant as ever at the age of 45, alongside the ’90s Brit pop sensation from All Saints.

It has been over two decades since Shola captivated the R&B scene with her 1997 hit “You Might Need Somebody.” Now, she returns to the spotlight, joining forces with Shaznay and reggae DJ General Levy. The collaboration has already been hailed as a drum and bass classic by nostalgic music lovers, who also can’t help but marvel at Shola’s enduring beauty.

Shola’s musical journey began in London when she was discovered by record label owner Kwame Kwaten at just 15. Her breakthrough came with her second single, which climbed to number four on the UK Singles Chart and became one of the year’s biggest hits. This success paved the way for her debut album “Much Love,” which peaked at number six and sold over a million copies, earning her significant acclaim including two MOBO awards and a Brit Award.

Despite taking a hiatus after her second album “In Return” in 1999, Shola made a notable comeback with the reggae-influenced EP “Surreal” in 2015. She has since remained active in the music scene, reflecting on her whirlwind experiences in the ’90s and continuing to perform, including a sold-out show earlier this month at the Royal Albert Hall with DJ Spoony.

Shola’s personal life has also flourished; she is a mother to her son Mekhi, born in 2003, and continues to share snippets of her life with her fans on Instagram. Recently, she celebrated her birthday at the World Peace Yoga retreat in India, embracing both personal growth and professional resurgence.

As Shola Ama continues to tour and record new music, her legacy as one of the UK’s most cherished R&B voices endures, resonating with fans old and new.
