Mati Torres Brings The Wyld EP to Subsoil Records

If there’s one flavour of house music I’ll happily take any day of the week, it’s that slightly dirty mix of acid energy and dreamy, hypnotic stuff. Give me a rolling bassline, a filter going a bit wild and a synth that keeps messing about in the background, and I’ll be your guy.

I’ll admit, I had way too much fun with this one. I went in to take notes and ended up forgetting about the notes for a bit. So, welcome to Mati Torres and The Wyld, his new three-track EP coming through Subsoil Records.

Neuquén has entered the chat

Mati comes from Neuquén, Argentina, and his sound pulls from Minimal House, House and Electro House. You can hear that straight away in the way he builds things: tight and clean percussion, bouncy basslines, little vocal cuts creeping in and out, and plenty of space for the groove to do its thang. That last thang thing matters.

Mati doesn’t throw the whole plugin folder at you either. Despite the temptation to do so, he places each sound where it’s needed, then passes the hoover over the lot. I can’t ignore how the elements in the soup come in, do their thang and leave the groove alone.

Sometimes the best move in a DAW is keeping your hands away from the mouse for five minutes. I’m still fighting that battle myself, but Mati Torres seems pretty comfortable with the idea.

Let The Wyld flow in full, and you’ll hear exactly what I’m talking about. You get the hypnotic side, you get the club energy, and underneath it all, that cheeky little groove just keeps the whole thing ticking.

Mati and the right people

Mati Torres already has the kind of support that makes me stop and go, “Right… who’s this guy then?” His productions have already picked up support from Sosa, Franky Rizardo, East End Dubs and Enzo Siragusa, and his tracks have already been doing the rounds in some proper UK underground spots. Always a good sign in my book, that’s a pretty decent journey from Neuquén.

Now The Wyld brings him together with Subsoil Records for the next step, and you can hear Mati settling into his own sound now, which I like. No chasing whatever everyone else decided was cool this week is a good choice, I like that.
