There’s something undeniably magnetic about the 80s. It’s the synths, the drum machines, the unrelenting sense of big hair and bigger emotions. And LunaRover debut single, Chimera, dives deep into this magnetic nostalgia.

Influenced by the iconic likes of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears, Ben Pelletier and Kevin Rieth have brewed a song that feels like a DeLorean ride through space. Past Saturn’s rings, beyond the borders of sound, and crash straight into the modern textures of St. Vincent and Alabama Shakes.

LunaRover Chimera: A Nostalgic Yet Modern Journey

Let’s set the scene: December 29th, 2024, marked the official launch of Chimera. Amid the glitter of holiday leftovers, the song makes its official landing, shimmering with synthesizers that echo memories of 80s dance floors. Also spiked with the immediacy of today’s alt-pop scene. Recorded entirely at home in Silver Spring, MD, the track is an intimate creation. A pure reflection of Kevin and Ben’s collaborative process. DIY to the core, Chimera evolved with some kind of magic experimentation: noisy Moog synthesizers that sound like they’ve been beamed in from the dark side of the moon, 80s-inspired drum fills courtesy of their long-time collaborator Tench Tillman, and – the pièce de résistance – a backwards saxophone solo in the bridge, played by the virtuoso Artem Zhulyev. It’s wild. It’s hypnotic. And unlike anything else.

The Emotional Core of LunaRover Chimera

The song’s title, Chimera, is as apt as they come. A mythical beast stitched together from impossibilities. The lyrics dive deep into the disillusionment of failed love. “We were riding a breeze,” sings Kevin, his vocals cutting through the track’s layered textures. The song reflects on the all-too-familiar realization that sometimes, we fall in love with an idea rather than the person. The refrain, “I can’t be your answer,” is like a sword. Sharp, resolute, and heartbreakingly liberating.

Collaboration Behind LunaRover Chimera

Ben and Kevin’s chemistry was not born yesterday. They’ve been jamming for over a decade. Even so, LunaRover marks a bold new trajectory for the duo, showcasing their evolution and creative ambition. Synthesizer-driven alt-pop is their rocket ship. And yes, Chimera is the launch. Kevin’s role as a jack-of-all-trades. Vocals, synth, samples, guitar. All pairing seamlessly with Ben’s mastery of synthesizers and production finesse. Together, they’ve shaped a dynamic force, bouncing ideas back and forth in a creative volley that births something as out-of-this-world as Chimera.

LunaRover Makes Chimera Your Sonic Odyssey

Chimera doesn’t tiptoe into the world. It crashes in – a raw, unfiltered statement of LunaRover’s bold ambitions. This is not that over-polished studio gimmick. With a DIY setup as their playground and decades of influence fuelling their sound, Ben and Kevin have created a debut that commands attention. Whether you’re worshipping at the altar of 80s synths, craving the edge of alt-pop, or just someone who appreciates music with guts, Chimera earns its place on your playlist, no questions asked.
