Keeana Kee “Tik Tok”: The Ultimate Summer Anthem Groover City
La Luna, the new single from Brett Ashby, works better when you give it a minute. The artist belongs to the second camp, and this release settles there naturally. Released in 2023, it still feels fresh – a laid-back R&B / pop track.
Ashby’s background falls naturally into visual art, and you can hear that straight away, because La Luna feels painted rather than produced. That space in the sound mattered more to me than anything else.
I think I really needed this song. I liked how the vocals stay back and don’t crowd the track. The lyrics come in fragments – “the higher power is interested in your love,” “isolation and frequency,” “a touch on my shoulder.” They read like notes taken along the way, open to interpretation. That’s the kind of artistry I go wild for.
There’s a softness here that feels deliberate, nothing rushes to wrap itself up. La Luna keeps things even, and that worked for me.
Before music entered the picture, Brett Ashby learned to speak through colour and motion. His visual work often starts in physical movement – using skateboards or surfboards as tools – letting gravity, speed, and balance decide the mark. I like that you can see the time and movement in it. I hear the same thinking in La Luna. This song goes where it needs to go.
Brett Ashby often speaks about capturing energy as it exists in a moment. In painting, colour carries emotion and healing. In music, tone and space do the same work. La Luna holds that alignment, where sound behaves like pigment, absorbing light rather than reflecting it back loudly.
Brett Ashby’s path stretches across continents – Melbourne studios, years spent between London and New York, worldwide exhibitions and commissions. Music enters his practice nicely, treated as another living form. He writes while travelling, walking until ideas show up, then typing them down. You can hear that pace in his music.
Listening to La Luna, I hear an artist who knows when to hold back. He gives things time. The song fits naturally within his work. If this connects with your taste, you can follow Brett Ashby on Spotify, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook for more from this project.
