TELL Hate Yourself in the Morning

I often think one wrong decision has the legs of a marathon runner. You make it today, then tomorrow you have to live with it. TELL seem to understand exactly how that works, and Hate Yourself in the Morning throws it into four minutes of loud, catchy rock.

The Boston alternative-rock band released Hate Yourself in the Morning on June 22. Right before their June 25 show at Warp & Weft in Lowell. They also head to O’Brien’s Pub in Allston on July 2 and The Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain on August 8, so the regret comes with some tour dates you need to pay attention. Practical. Very rock and roll.

The track follows Things To Do When It’s Dark, their anti-I.C.E. resistance rock anthem, and shows another side of the band. Recorded with Benny Grotto at Mad Oak Studio in Allston and produced by David Wildman, Hate Yourself in the Morning throws handclaps, a taunting “na-na-na” (I’m always a sucker for a good na-na-na), slashing dual guitars, wobbly basslines, and big chorus harmonies. Good luck getting that chorus out of your head.

David Wildman says he had fun with the imagery, building a story around a relationship where one person falls for someone with a bad reputation. I couldn’t help smiling when I read that. I’ve known people like that over the years. Everyone around them could see exactly where things were going, but nobody said much. Because sometimes people only believe life after it proves them wrong. Eventually, it did. Maybe that’s why this lyric made so much sense to me.

The Band Behind the Morning

David Wildman shares TELL with guitarist Jim Foster, bassist Jason Raffi, and drummer Pat Crann. Since the pandemic-era EP Stir Crazy, they’ve kept building on what they started, with 2024’s Life in Reverse leading to this next batch of songs. Hate Yourself in the Morning also marks the first time all four members have contributed to the writing and arrangements together.

For me, the interesting part comes next. TELL already have another single lined up for September, with a new album expected before the year closes. If this release says anything, it’s that the current lineup has found a rhythm together and seems ready to push a little further every time they walk into the studio. I’m curious to hear where that road leads.

Do like me: follow TELL on Spotify, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Bandcamp. I have a feeling the best chapters are still ahead.
