Darude Reworks Sandstorm with a Storm 25 Mix for 2026

When I occasionally hear the word “sandstorm” on meteo, my brain still ignores the weather and goes straight to Darude. Honestly, say “sandstorm” and I hear that riff before I picture any actual sand.

Twenty-five years after that synth line started uniting people around clubs, stadiums, gaming rooms and the internet, Darude has gone back into his own machine and rebuilt it. Sandstorm (Storm 25 Mix) comes as the first official remix in over 20 years, with the guy who made the original now reaching for the sacred buttons again.

Back inside the storm

Darude went back. Before changing anything, he recreated the original Sandstorm down to the last hi-hat and Supersaw pad. I can relate to that. It’s like rebuilding the house brick by brick, then asking yourself which wall deserves the hammer.

From there, Darude kept that melody everyone knows straight away and gave the track a much bigger 2026 club punch. The drop comes in with that big-room punch and some melodic techno flavour, then the breakdown opens things up with those orchestral textures. The idea first grew inside Darude’s live sets during the STORM 25 anniversary tour. All after a serious public test at Tomorrowland 2025 alongside Alan Walker. The crowd loved it, so that was a pretty good sign.

Twenty-five years of cultural damage

Sandstorm has travelled ridiculously far beyond dance music. The original has passed one billion global streams. Then collected Gold and Platinum certifications, and clocked more than 322 million YouTube views. FIFA World Cup, NFL, Copa America and the Paris 2024 Olympics have all used it, while EA Sports, Fortnite and DOTA helped carry it into gaming culture and meme immortality.

Behind the Darude name is Ville Virtanen, and by now that name has carried him a very long way: more than 10 million records sold, four Emma Awards, a German Dance Award and a Dance Star Award, plus shows at Tomorrowland, Ministry of Sound, Eurovision and TwitchCon.

“I’m just grateful people are still dancing to it,” Darude says about Sandstorm. Fair enough. After all the edits, mashups and bootlegs the track has collected over the years, he finally went back and had another go at his own monster.
