Bruce Dickinson on Iron Maiden: More Than Just a Band

Published:

During a recent episode of the Brazilian TV talk show “Conversa Com Bial,” Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden was asked whether the band operates democratically. His response revealed a deep understanding of teamwork dynamics akin to those in sports.

Dickinson explained that while a band, much like a football team, cannot function fully democratically due to the necessity of roles such as a manager or a captain, there is still room for discussion and disagreement. “You can’t have a team as a democracy,” he remarked, pointing out that passion often leads to arguments which are vital for a team’s evolution. Iron Maiden handles its internal dynamics by dividing responsibilities that play to each member’s strengths, which has led to a natural, organic workflow within the group.

He used the example of band founder and bassist Steve Harris’s strong musical visions, which are usually supported by the group, especially if they align well with the contributions of other members like Adrian Smith, the band’s guitarist. Dickinson sees this flexibility and mutual respect as essential for their longevity and success.

“Iron Maiden is a product of mutual respect and understanding”

In another conversation two months earlier with Stereogum, Dickinson reflected on why Iron Maiden has seen no lineup changes since he and Smith re-joined the band in 1999. He attributed this stability to a mature realization that they are individuals united by their choice to perform as Iron Maiden, rather than a homogenous entity. This mature perspective has allowed them to foster more adult relationships within the band, characterized by openness and honesty.

Dickinson emphasized that the current harmony within Iron Maiden is a product of their mutual respect and understanding of each other as individuals. Despite their different backgrounds and the unlikely likelihood of their paths crossing outside of the band, Iron Maiden has become a family. This kinship, along with the global love and recognition they receive, fuels their continued passion and success in the heavy metal scene.

In a 2019 interview with Spain’s RockFM radio station, Dickinson emphasized his stance on re-joining Iron Maiden, clarifying that his return was conditional on the band’s willingness to innovate rather than simply relive the past. He expressed no interest in reconnecting with the band if the focus was solely on nostalgia. This highlights his desire to push the band forward creatively, ensuring that their reunions are productive and forward-thinking, not just a retrospective celebration of their earlier success.
